Alexandria voters went the way of the rest of the Commonwealth and overwhelmingly selected Massachusetts Senator John Kerry as their Democratic candidate for president.

Slightly more than 16 percent of the city’s registered voters cast ballots in the first Democratic presidential primary since 1988. Kerry received 7,303 votes, or 53.2 percent of those cast . . .

The real news for the primary in Alexandria was the new electronic voting machines. . . .

VOTERS complained that there was no paper trail for voter verification. "I really understand this concern and if the General Assembly wishes to do so, this system can be retrofitted to produce paper verification at some later time," [Alexandria’s registrar of voters. Tom] Parkins said.

eSlate was purchased at a cost of about $750,000 and was implemented two years before the national deadline for localities to procure Americans with Disabilities Act compliant voting systems. . . .

Why does the state of Texas run its own venture-capital business, anyway? Who benefits politically from high-risk investments in companies that -- like Veridian -- are in potentially unsavory lines of work? If such concerns are all subordinate to the power of the dollar, then the natural temptation is to credit the Republicans with responsibility for the Texas Growth Fund and any successes -- or scandals -- that may emerge from the investment of over half a billion dollars of state money. A 1988 constitutional amendment creating the fund was presided over by then-Gov. Bill Clements, a Dallas oilman and former high-ranking Defense Department official. (The fund actually began operations in 1992.)
But a very important Democratic hand may have been at work behind the scenes as well.

"That was [Bob] Bullock's deal," says a former investment official of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, who asked not to be named but was present at the TGF's creation. According to this former official, the then-lieutenant governor (Gov. George W. Bush's mentor) considered the teachers' pension fund a big bank -- which in a sense it is, with a present value of $77 billion -- a very small percentage of which could be tapped to great effect for political purposes.

Profits (or lack thereof) aside, it is TGF's investment in Hart InterCivic which may be the most problematic.. . .

If you live in Texas, no matter where you live or what sort of work you do, you're profiting from the various wars, armed interventions, covert actions, and miscellaneous military conflicts now being pursued worldwide by American armed forces and the U.S. intelligence community.

Precisely what Veridian does to earn all that money is secret. . . . The company has by its own admission recruited among Air Force and CIA senior staff. . .

There is a "Third Kind" living amongst us in this Republic. This "Third Kind" comes in a political package disguising themselves as Republicans, or World Conservatives of the International Democrat Union and Democrats, or World Liberals of The Third Way.

The "Third Kind" wants to establish a self-regulating classless society on planet earth. I have had radio encounters with two Republican members of the "Third Kind," Ann Coulter (author of the best seller Slander) and David Horowitz (author of Empire and Revolution and How to Beat the Democrats and Other Subversive Ideas).

People such as Coulter and Horowitz do not want to talk about the very real existence of the "Third Kind" nor do they want you to know what is really taking place in this Republic and the world.

a retired Texas National Guard officer said Wednesday he overheard a conversation in 1997 between then-Gov. Bush's chief of staff, Joe Allbaugh, and then-Adjutant Gen. Daniel James of the Texas Air National Guard in which he contends those two men spoke about getting rid of any military records that would "embarrass the governor.''

Retired Lt. Col. Bill Burkett told the AP that he saw documents from Bush's file discarded in a trash can a few days later at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. Burkett described them as performance and pay documents. He said the documents bore the header: ``Bush, George W. 1lt.'' - meaning first lieutenant.

In a hearing before the House Financial Services committee yesterday, Congressman Ron Paul took the opportunity to ask Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan several pointed questions. Greenspan’s normal evasiveness was tested when Paul asked him directly whether Fed actions represent a threat to freedom and prosperity. Mr. Greenspan’s startling response: The Fed does indeed have “inordinate power” over the American economy.

“I certainly appreciate Mr. Greenspan’s candor,” Paul stated after the hearing. “The Fed does have a tremendous impact on the economy and our lives, but its board members generally escape any political scrutiny for their actions. I want to make the public and Congress more aware of just how powerful--and destructive-- the Fed really is. The unbridled expansion of the money supply will hurt all of us in the long run, in the form of price inflation, destruction of personal savings, and higher interest rates.”

Paul also cited economist Friedrich Hayek’s “pretense of knowledge” principle during the hearing, arguing that no amount of Fed “wisdom” can substitute for the discipline and price setting of the free market. He pressed Greenspan to admit that no government planner can know the “correct” interest rate for the economy, but the Chairman again sidestepped this central question.

MEMPHIS – Two members of the Air National Guard unit that President George W. Bush allegedly served with as a young Guard flyer in 1972 had been told to expect him and were on the lookout for him. He never showed, however; of that both Bob Mintz and Paul Bishop are certain. . . .

Recalls Memphian Mintz, now 63 . . . assumed that Bush "changed his mind and went somewhere else" to do his substitute drill. It was not "somewhere else," however . . .

If you read the 'Kean Commission-White House PDB Deal' Times story carefully, you'll see that Kean and Hamilton's comment that the agreement on PDB access reached today with Bush's White House attorney Gonzalez "would enable the panel to review 'all - we repeat, all - P.D.B.'s responsive to the Commission's document requests'..." is hyperbole. In fact, all the White House agreed to do -- and, worse, the Kean Commission agreed to accept it -- was to release the PDB notes ALREADY written up by Zelikow and Gorelick which Gonzales had been blocking the release of. And because other reports have stated that, prior to this, ONLY Zelikow was allowed to see ALL 260 PDBs to take notes ON, it's almost certain that Gorelick was allowed only to see those covering the Clinton Administration, and Zelikow those from BOTH the Bush Admin. AND the Clinton Admin.

The Commission has therefore agreed to accept the 'say so' of ZELIKOW ALONE ON ALL BUSH ADMINISTRATION PDBs, which is tantamount to RICE herself, or Bush himself, writing those summaries, as Zelikow is Rice's crony, former book co-author and Bush Transition Team NSC head -- and it was Zelikow's NSC Transition Team that got the 'Al Qaeda is the No. 1 U.S. threat' briefings from the outgoing Clinton NSC Adviser Sandy Berger and Richard Clarke and then made the decision to downplay Al Qaeda and terrorism in the incoming Administration regardless. The key sentence in the below NY Times article (CAPS added for emphasis) is:

"...Commission member Jamie S. Gorelick and the Commission's executive director Philip D. Zelikow HAD ALREADY PREPARED a detailed report on all the presidential briefs important to the investigation..."

Emboldened by their recent move to ban ephedra, FDA officials are chomping at the bit. Now they have three more supplement ingredients in their sights - all marked for official extinction.

Dr. Robert Shope was 74 and was reported to have died from pulmonary fibrosis. This disease can be caused by viruses or bacteria. In the last two years, Dr Shope worked on a Defense Department project to develope antidotes to viral agents that terrorists might use. Dr. Shope was Co-Director of The World Arbovirus Reference Center. They maintain a large collection of viruses which are made available to researchers worldwide.

Dr. Michael Kiley died Jan. 24. He was 52. He was reported to have died from a heart attack. He was the Chief Biosafety Officer for the U.S. Dept. Of Agriculture.

My source says that both of these Doctors were working on the upgrade of the UTMB lab to a level 4. Being a level 4 lab means that the lab can now work with the most dangerous microbes known to man. Plum Island is another lab seeking this same upgrade for the purpose of biowarfare research.
