HR 3179 is a Sensenbrenner-Goss bill that would expand the Patriot Act. It is time to oppose this bill strongly, as it has started moving in the House. A subcommittee of House Judiciary held a hearing on May 18, then Congressional Quarterly reported last week that Goss (Chair of House Intelligence Committee) is considering tacking the whole thing onto the intelligence authorization bill so it can be marked up in closed session. The attached letter objects both to the idea of considering these important issues in the secret process of the intelligence authorization bill, and to the substance of the bill itself.
This piece of legislation would expand the ?secret proceedings? already being used in government cases, would set criminal penalties for a library or other entities or persons to whom a government-issued subpoena is issued if they disclose it to anyone else, and would expand the reach of the Patriot Act to foreign persons with no connection to any foreign power.
A Jewish man working on the re-election campaign of Congressman Jim Moran (D-Virginia) has made an unsubstatiated allegation of 'anti-Semitism' on the congressman's part -- see, e.g., Newsmax June 4, 2004:
Moran's former pollster Alan Secrest today alleged that the northern Virginia Democrat made an anti-Semitic comment at a campaign staff meeting in March. Secrest said he quit because of the slur.
Secrest would not quote Moran but described the remark as a "dismissive characterization of a group of Democrats ... belittling them and characterizing them by their religion as a basis for their approach."
[...]
Moran said he fired Secrest after they clashed over Secrest's desire to conduct expensive polling. "He told me, 'If I leave you, I will teach you a lesson you will never forget.'"
Joe Trippi, a Moran ally and former spokesman for Howard Dean, backed the congressman's story.
So this year, Moran faces a Democrat primary challenge (the nominee is sure to win in the district made up of bedroom communities of Beltway bureaucrats) from one Andy Rosenberg. Interestingly, Moran's hometown of Alexandria, which dominates the district, has now fully turned over its 'electoral' process to Hart InterCivic voting machines, manufactured by a company built on investments from a CIA-connected Texas state slush fund and a ClearChannel mogul. The result of the election should be a strong indicator of how close those factions are allied with the Zionists these days.
Saudi authorities gave safe passage to three al-Qaida gunmen after the they killed 10 of the hostages they were holding at a hotel in the oil hub of Khobar, a senior security official said.
The Saudi official said upon hearing hostages had been killed, US officials advised the Saudis that letting the militants go would avert a bigger catastrophe.
The US embassy in Riyadh did not have immediate comment on the Saudi official?s account, which dovetailed with witness accounts.
President George W. Bush?s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader?s state of mind.
In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as "enemies of the state."
Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home.
"It reminds me of the Nixon days," says a longtime GOP political consultant with contacts in the White House. "Everybody is an enemy; everybody is out to get him. That?s the mood over there."
In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be "God?s will" and then tells aides to "fuck over" anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration.
[...]
But the President who says he rules at the behest of God can also tongue-lash those he perceives as disloyal, calling them "fucking assholes" in front of other staff, berating one cabinet official in front of others and labeling anyone who disagrees with him "unpatriotic" or "anti-American."

New evidence shows that the evacuation involved more than the departure of 142 Saudis on six charter flights that the commission is investigating. According to newly released documents, 160 Saudis left the United States on 55 flights immediately after 9/11 ? making a total of about 300 people who left with the apparent approval of the Bush administration, far more than has been reported before. The records were released by the Department of Homeland Security in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative, nonpartisan watchdog group in Washington.
The vast majority of the newly disclosed flights were commercial airline flights, not charters, often carrying just two or three Saudi passengers. They originated from more than 20 cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit and Houston. One Saudi Arabian Airlines flight left Kennedy Airport on Sept. 13 with 46 Saudis. The next day, another Saudi Arabian Airlines flight left with 13 Saudis...
Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar, told The Hill newspaper recently that he took full responsibility for approving some flights. But we don't know if other Bush administration officials participated in the decision.
The passengers should have been questioned about any links to Osama bin Laden, or his financing. We have long known that some faction of the Saudi elite has helped funnel money to Islamist terrorists... Prince Ahmed bin Salman, who has been accused of being an intermediary between Al Qaeda and the House of Saud, boarded one of the evacuation planes in Kentucky. Was he interrogated by the F.B.I. before he left?
Newly released FBI files reveal that presumed Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry attended a second meeting with North Vietnamese communists in Paris in the early 1970s. Kerry has previously admitted to meeting only once with the North Vietnamese delegations in 1970.
According to the FBI files, Kerry met with representatives from the North Vietnamese government in Paris in 1971. [Kerry] has said nothing of the 1971 meeting.
Researcher and author Jerry Corsi [said,] "Kerry has admitted to one meeting with Madam Binh. Now we have reason to believe there was a second ... "Kerry needs to explain to the American people why he directly went into negotiations with communists, Corsi added. Corsi has written an essay on Kerry's dealings with the Vietemese communists on the Internet site, WinterSoldier.com.
According to Gerald Nicosia, a Kerry supporter and the author of the book Home to War: A History of the Vietnam Veterans' Movement, Kerry's second visit to Paris to meet with emissaries of the North Vietnamese communist government is documented in redacted FBI files from the era.

Vietnamese communists have shown their gratitude to Kerry by displaying a photo of him at Ho Chi Minh City's Protestors Hall of the War Remnants Museum.
Many Bonesmen who had become C.I.A. operatives and government officials returned to the Tomb and discussed highly classified matters, as National-Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy reportedly did. "The things that fascinated me at Pat gatherings were the level of penetratiion ... and how open they were about talking in the Tomb," says a Bonesman who graduated in the 1980s. "They talked about foreign operations at the timne, the stuff that became Iran-contra. The level of trust was startling. It was like once you were trusted enough to get in, people just talked openly."
This is from "Powerful Secrets," Alexandra Robbins' article on Skull & Bones in the new issue of Vanity Fair, on stands now with British soccer star David Beckham on the cover. Libertythink will feature more information from this article soon. A focus of the article is G.W. Bush and John Kerry's ties to the group.

The Libertarian Party, faced with the opportunity to select a candidate for president who had millions to spend on his own campaign, who had achieved a measure of fame in Hollywood as a producer of films and a consort of celebrities on the order of Bette Midler, and someone else with no money and zero name recognition, chose?well you know the answer...
The LP has displayed a genius for assigning itself a role in American politics akin to irrelevance, and I am sad to say that this record of genius is likely to remain unbroken as campaign 2004 unfolds during the months ahead and Ralph Nader continues to capture all the attention given to third-party candidates for the highest office in the land.
[...]
Aaron Russo was the one candidate (arguably one of two) who had some sliver of a chance to make a splash for the LP this time around, to make the media stand up and pay him some attention as he laid out his plan to trim the size of the overstuffed, all-powerful, gluttonous beast we call the federal government. Money and celebrity endorsements are two of the ingredients needed to insinuate oneself into the public?s truncated attention span, and Russo had both of them at his disposal. Supposedly, Badnarik bested him and Gary Nolan (the third viable contender for the spot who inexplicably threw his own support to Badnarik) in a debate before the vote took place, and many libertarians are more interested in scoring ideological debating points than they are in having a genuine impact on the society we live in.
I have no idea how good a candidate Russo would have been had he been able to secure the LP nod. One esteemed libertarian told me he?s "rich as Croesus and crazy as hell." But rich and crazy isn?t bad when the society you live in is populated by obese, brain-dead couch potatoes who believe war crimes are perfectly fine as long as they?re committed by red-blooded American "heroes," when the president of the country can barely string a sentence together without the aid of his speechwriters, when the same gentleman can scarcely make a policy decision without the imprimatur of his own vice president, when the nation?s intelligence agencies make an end run around the accepted rules of warfare in an undefined "war against terror," and when an opposition party with any guts would be screaming for the president?s impeachment . . .
The average American is criminally ignorant of his own heritage and about two cheeseburgers away from a coronary at any given moment. An LP candidate crazy enough to grab the electorate by the throat and shake it out of its comatose state would have been an ideal choice this year. An LP candidate with deep pockets and enough fire in his belly to make his voice heard above the usual cacophony of nonsense that fills the ether in an election year might have been the right ticket for success this year.
Too late. The LP has blown yet another opportunity to have a genuine impact.
Personally, I believe CoIntelPro is alive and well and is firmly in control of the LP.
The LP if well publicized would be able to grab a sizable chunk of the vote. That there has been no concerted effort to increase the size of the Party and to popularize Libertarian Principles is to me a prima facie case for internal sabotage from some quarter.
Certainly the R's fear that eventuality as many Paleocons are very close to PaleoLibertarians and would vote for a viable Libertarian in preference to a Socialist Leaning NAZI like Duhbya.
Arlington County take notice: Officials are collecting outstanding taxes and fines at the rate of about $900 an hour with the help of an electronic roving eye.
County officials last month began using the BootFinder, a small, hand-held camera that scans license plates of parked cars to identify people with delinquent property-tax bills and unpaid parking tickets.
The county spent $27,000 to buy the camera, which was developed by Alexandria company G2 Tactics, and has recovered about $900 each hour of its use, said Arlington County Treasurer Frank O'Leary.
[...]
Two treasury workers patrol the city in a van, aiming the camera at the license plates of parked cars. The camera is connected to a laptop computer that compares the license owner's name against a database of persons with outstanding taxes or fines.
If a car's owner has any unpaid taxes or fines, the computer audibly informs the camera's operator, who calls the treasurer's office for verification. After the information is verified, the workers remove the car's license plates and place a bright green levy sticker on the driver's side windshield.

The recent (5/26/04) appearance of David Ray Griffin on Democracy Now! (DN) repudiates every principle of press freedom that you claim to represent. It was a shameful betrayal to the movements opposing the Bush() Regime around the globe.
First of all, it is very revealing that you chose to have Griffin appear on your show in a hostile "debate" format. This contrasted remarkably from the easy, non-confrontational (and extended) interviews recently given to Richard Clarke, Peter Lance and Sibel Edwards. (Richard Clarke is a "defector" from the Bush Regime. Peter Lance is an author. Edwards is a "whistle-blower". All three uniquely advocate the official story of 911.) The clear implication is that DN is biased in favor of sources who advocate the official propaganda of the State.
Recall that the Ford Foundation has been reportedly linked to the CIA for decades. By specifically choosing Berlet to challenge Griffin this episode of Democracy Now! strongly resembles a CIA propaganda campaign.
Third, Berlet's major contention against Griffin's book is that Griffin is relying on experts who lack the qualifications to offer opinions about basic engineering and physics. So why not have on an expert promoting the official science of the Bush Regime with one of the many researchers who dispute it?
Niaz Khan... the diminutive Briton who is making the extraordinary claim that he warned about the attacks on New York's Twin Towers 18 months before they actually took place on September 11, 2001.
The former curry house waiter claims he alerted American and British officials to the Al Qaeda plot.
[...]
A report seen by this newspaper and prepared for a powerful U.S. security committee into the tragedy confirms that Khan contacted counter-terrorism officers at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Newark, New Jersey, as early as April 2000.
He was grilled for three weeks and twice passed a lie detector test...
Khan was simply shipped back to Britain, where our intelligence services also discounted his warning of Bin Laden's air hijack plot.
Now Khan has been approached by lawyers for the families of the 9/11 victims who say his revelations may prove that Al Qaeda's terrorist attacks on the U.S. could have been prevented.
One American attorney, Michael Bryant, acting for a group of bereaved families, said this week: 'If this man informed America before 9/11 that there was a terror plot to fly planes into buildings, we want to speak with him.

The selection of Iyad Allawi to become prime minister of the interim government of Iraq from July 1 is a surprising development
[...]
Allawi, the founder of Iraqi National Accord (INA), is a former Ba'athist and an ex-military man. He built his career as an anti-Saddam expatriate by consistently cooperating with, and supplying intelligence to, the British MI6 and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Consequently, his nomination as prime minister is perceived, at least in Washington, as a success for the Department of State and the CIA.
[...]
His organization, INA, is also infamously known for passing on intelligence to MI6 that claimed that Saddam could launch a weapons-of-mass-destruction attack within 45 minutes.
TIME has obtained an internal Pentagon e-mail sent by an Army Corps of Engineers official?whose name was blacked out by the Pentagon?that raises questions about Cheney's arm's-length policy toward his old employer. Dated March 5, 2003, the e-mail says "action" on a multibillion-dollar Halliburton contract was "coordinated" with Cheney's office. The e-mail says Douglas Feith, a high-ranking Pentagon hawk, got the "authority to execute RIO," or Restore Iraqi Oil, from his boss, who is Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz. RIO is one of several large contracts the U.S. awarded to Halliburton last year.
The e-mail says Feith approved arrangements for the contract "contingent on informing WH [White House] tomorrow. We anticipate no issues since action has been coordinated w VP's [Vice President's] office." Three days later, the Army Corps of Engineers gave Halliburton the contract, without seeking other bids. TIME located the e-mail among documents provided by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group.
[...]
Cheney is linked to his old firm in at least one other way. His recently filed 2003 financial-disclosure form reveals that Halliburton last year invoked an insurance policy to indemnify Cheney for what could be steep legal bills "arising from his service" at the company.
