"This particular piece was struck by the upper part of the fuselage," says Frank Gayle, a metallurgist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. "We see how the bolts performed, everything along that line."

They've taken tiny samples of the steel and shot them through an air cannon to precisely calculate the damage done by the hijacked jets.

The tests strongly suggest the airplane strikes did not bring the towers down. And it wasn't the thousands of gallons of jet fuel the planes carried.

"The fuel itself got consumed in a matter of minutes," says Shyam Sunder, NIST's lead investigator in the WTC probe.

So the popular belief that all of this fuel made the building collapse inevitable, is not true, says Sunder.

To find out what why the buildings actually collapsed, scientists at the NIST re-created the 96th floor, complete with computers, carpets, furniture and paper. Then they set it on fire. Now, investigators are close to proving that it was this everyday office material burning in a fire fed by oxygen from continually breaking windows that ultimately caused the steel to give.

"Steel tends to soften or weaken and become more like Playdough when you heat it up," says Sunder.

Investigators will lay out their final report this fall. They'll issue sweeping recommendations aimed at making buildings better able to withstand catastrophic events and will call for improving evacuations with an eye toward surviving the unthinkable.

Archive monitors assigned to watch Sandy Berger review top-secret documents allowed the former national security adviser to break the rules and be left alone, the New York Daily News reported.

Berger, the target of a federal investigation for allegedly smuggling secret files out of the National Archives, persuaded the monitors to leave him alone in the high-security room by saying he had to make sensitive phone calls, a senior law enforcement source told the paper.

"He was supposed to be monitored at all times but kept asking the monitor to leave so he could make private calls," the official said.

The sources said Berger stepped out of the room as he looked over the documents and allegedly stashed some in his clothing.

The archive monitors told the FBI Berger was observed stuffing his socks with handwritten notes about files that were to be given to the 9-11 Commission.

At 68, many people are slowing down. Not John Wicks: He's going to Iraq. Wicks, a psychiatrist, has been called out of military retirement by the Army to fill a shortage of mental health experts needed to help soldiers cope with combat. He could be gone as long as a year.

The Army hasn't told Wicks what his exact assignment in Iraq is, or where in the country it will send him.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans hosted a hastily organized ``town hall'' meeting with Silicon Valley executives and workers Thursday afternoon, a gathering that was part political campaign, part tech talk.

Dozens of workers took time out of their offices and cubicles to hear Evans, in the Bay Area to attend this weekend's Russian River Bohemian Club retreat for the business and political elite. The meeting was announced the day before in an e-mail from Tony Perkins, the former chief executive of Red Herring and head of the AlwaysOn news service and online network. It was held in an auditorium at Hewlett-Packard's Palo Alto headquarters.

After an extensive investigation, the government has found no evidence that terrorists tried to profit from stock and options trading ahead of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday.

The SEC was among several federal agencies that investigated, starting soon after the attacks, whether such market manipulation occurred. The agencies, working with stock and options exchanges, reviewed more than 9.5 million transactions that took place during the weeks preceding Sept. 11, 2001.

"In the course of that review, we did not develop any evidence suggesting that anyone who had advance knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks traded on the basis of that information," the SEC said.

That conclusion, included in the final report issued Thursday by the Sept. 11 commission, was the government's first public statement on the findings of the trading probe. It could not immediately be determined when the investigation was completed.

A Florida man has been charged with stealing large amounts of consumer information from Acxiom Corp., one of the world's largest database companies.

The new indictment comes on the heels of a separate case last year in which an Ohio man pleaded guilty to hacking into an Acxiom server. Acxiom manages personal information on millions of consumers, along with financial and other internal data for companies.

The new case, against Scott Levine, 45, represents "what may be the largest cases of intrusion of personal data to date," said Christopher Wray, U.S. assistant attorney general, at a news conference in Washington.

Prosecutors said the stolen data included personal information about "a great number of individuals," but they added that the information wasn't used for identity fraud.

Levine ran Snipermail.com, which distributed ads over e-mail. Prosecutors said Levine and other Snipermail employees got into Acxiom's server to take 8.2 gigabytes of consumer files in 2002 and 2003.

A cop... was brought in for questioning last night in Monday's pipe-bomb explosion in the Times Square subway station, sources said.

The saga of "Jack" Idema, the American arrested for running a private interrogation centre in Afghanistan, took a new twist yesterday when he claimed that he was acting with the knowledge and agreement of Donald Rumsfeld's office.

Mr Idema, who has been accused of having a makeshift jail in which detainees were hung by their feet, claimed that US authorities "condoned and supported" his freelance activities.

"We were working for the US counter-terrorist group and working with the Pentagon and some other federal agencies," said Mr Idema, whose full name is Jonathon Keith Idema, before the opening of a court hearing in Kabul, according to Reuters.

He told reporters: "We were in contact directly by fax and email and phone with Donald Rumsfeld's office.

"The American authorities absolutely condoned what we did. We have extensive evidence to that ... We're prepared to show emails and correspondence and tape-recorded conversations."

From New York, Mr Idema's lawyer, John Tiffany, told the Guardian: "We have documentary evidence regarding the US government's knowledge of my client's intended activities in Afghanistan."

Mr Tiffany said his client was not denying he had taken people into custody but would claim he had done so with the authorities' full knowledge.

FREDERICK, Md. — FBI agents yesterday combed laboratory suites at Fort Detrick — home to the Army's biological warfare defense program — and a source said they again were looking for evidence in the 2001 anthrax attacks.

The labs at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases have been closed since Friday, Fort Detrick spokesman Charles Dasey said.

A law-enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press the activity is related to the anthrax mailings that killed five persons and sickened 17 in autumn 2001.

FBI agents have visited Fort Detrick frequently since the unsolved attacks, amid speculation that the deadly spores or the person who sent them may be connected to the fort.

Ever since Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring, environmental extremists have sought to ban all DDT use. Using phony studies from the Environmental Defense Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council, the environmental activist-controlled Environmental Protection Agency banned DDT in 1972. The extremists convinced the nation that DDT was not only unsafe for humans but unsafe to birds and other creatures as well. Their arguments have since been scientifically refuted.

While DDT saved crops, forests and livestock, it also saved humans. In 1970, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences estimated that DDT saved more than 500 million lives during the time it was widely used. A scientific review board of the EPA showed that DDT is not harmful to the environment and showed it to be a beneficial substance that "should not be banned." According to the World Health Organization, worldwide malaria infects 300 million people. About 1 million die of malaria each year. Most of the victims are in Africa, and most are children.

In Sri Lanka, in 1948, there were 2.8 million malaria cases and 7,300 malaria deaths. With widespread DDT use, malaria cases fell to 17 and no deaths in 1963. After DDT use was discontinued, Sri Lankan malaria cases rose to 2.5 million in the years 1968 and 1969, and the disease remains a killer in Sri Lanka today.

The fact that DDT saves lives might account for part of the hostility toward it. Alexander King, founder of the Malthusian Club of Rome, wrote in a biographical essay in 1990: "My own doubts came when DDT was introduced. In Guyana, within two years, it had almost eliminated malaria. So my chief quarrel with DDT, in hindsight, is that it has greatly added to the population problem." Dr. Charles Wurster, one of the major opponents of DDT, is reported to have said, "People are the cause of all the problems. We have too many of them. The DFI was set up after last year's invasion as the depository for Iraq's multi-billion-dollar oil revenues and was administered, until June 28, by the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) - with notional UN oversight.

In particular, Mr Waxman is curious about "the [Bush] administration's last-minute 'draw-down' of billions of dollars from the DFI for unspecified expenses" prior to last month's transfer of sovereignty. "For example, $1bn [about £550m] was withdrawn from the DFI during the last month of the CPA's existence for unspecified 'security' purposes."

The administration provided no information about how these funds would be spent, Mr Waxman says, and has yet to do so.

John DeCamp: Anyway, so yeah, I won the million dollar judgment in federal court finally and it wasn't easy and I want to talk about that a little because some of the stuff coming out about pedophilia in the church now where things were written in my book way back then. But anyway to get to the heart of the matter that you called about as I understand it. I took simply the diaries of Paul Bonacci and I printed a good portion of them in my book and one of them - one of the areas described a trip in 1984. I could even read part of it here. In fact, in which he was taken to an area around Sacramento and then where they had the great big tall trees and then they went in where there is some owl. Some huge carved owl or something...

I didn't know there was a place called Bohemian Grove. I didn't write Bohemian Grove in the book because I didn't know what it was. I just took his diary. Anyway, it clearly is where he was taken and he was taken out there for a ceremony in which they committed some pretty horrible things on another boy. And three boys and they filmed it and I just took his words and the names he wrote there. And they’re right in the book.

And by the way just to answer your next question. Yes, I put names in the book, dates and everything that I could just as they were. Why? Because I figured blow it out all straight and I said when a number of threatening calls came after the first edition came out. They said, "This is the most libelous, slanderous thing we've ever heard." And I said, "Fine, I think I've done enough to prove it and I'm satisfied. If somebody feels that way, if somebody said these things about me I'd sue them for libel and slander."

"I went in January of '84 on every trip. I was paid by men King knew for sex. The summer of '84 sometime I went to Dallas, Texas and had sex with several men King knew in a hotel. I never had much personally to do with King only went where he told me to go.

A boy who was about 12 or 13, then we flew to Vegas to a desert strip and drove into Las Vegas to some ranch and got something. Then flew on to Sacramento. We were picked up by a white limo and taken to a hotel. I don't remember the name of it. We, meaning Nicholas and I, were driven to an area that had big, big trees. It took about an hour to get there. There was a cage with a boy in it who was not wearing anything. Nicholas and I were given these Tarzan things to put around us and some stuff like that. They told me to, (I won't use the word) blank the boy and stuff. (In other words have sex with him.) At first I said no and they held a gun to my genitals (I'll use that word) and said do it or else lose them or something like that. I began doing it to the boy and stuff. And Nicholas had anal sex and stuff. We were told to blank him and stuff and beat on him. I didn't try to hurt him.

"We were told to put our blanks in his mouth and stuff and sit on the boy’s blank and stuff and they filmed it. We did this stuff to the boy for about 30 minutes or an hour when a man came in and kicked us and stuff in the genitals. And picked us up and threw us. One said the men with the hoods would take care of the body for them.

About 2 hours later the men or Larry King came in and told us to go take a shower since we'd had only been hosed off at some guy’s house. We took a shower together and then were told to put on the Tarzan things. And after we were cleaned up and dressed in these things we were told to put on shorts, socks and a shirt and shoes and were driven to a house where the men were at some others. They had the film and they played it. As the men watched it they passed Nicholas and I around as if we were toys..."

I, John DeCamp, who wrote this book was the number one vote-getting delegate pledged to George [HW] Bush, famous president. At the Republican National Convention, I was the number one vote-getter from Nebraska attending the Republican National Convention in New Orleans and Texas and so on and so forth. And I guarantee you, I had no idea any of this was going on at the time. At the same time, I also attended the single biggest party ever put on at any, at any national convention. That was put on by Larry King at the Southport Ranch in Dallas at the Republican Convention in 1984. I attended it. It was only later, one of the things that I absolutely know when I interviewed this kid Paul Bonacci in prison, that I told you about, knew absolutely he was telling the truth when he starts describing that party and that Convention as well or better than I could. And you would have had to have physically been there, which he was – to know some of these things – to see and identify some of these things. So, just because you were at a party… And Larry King, by the way, rented a mansion on Embassy Row in Washington, DC that cost about $5000 a month during all this time even though Larry King was officially earning $16,000 a year during that time.

AJ: Well, let's go further. They use Bohemian Grove to compromise. [Cross-talk] They use it to compromise people. Dick Nixon, Richard Nixon said, quote, and this is on the record, I have a news article, it's "the most faggy place" he'd ever seen. He hated to go there but he went there for power. He went there to smooze. And, so you want to make all that clear, exactly. Max Stier, president and chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service — an organization devoted to revitalizing government service and transforming the way government works — is heralding nominees for the 56th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

President Clinton's national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

Not even a national emergency! This is probably the greatest book EVER written. It has lots of colorful pictures, and it's just so fun to "read" while I sit there for at least seven minutes wondering why I took a job that I have absolutely no skills for, and that when it comes right down to it, I didn't even want! It's not as good as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" (the words are bigger), but it comes close!

The book was OK. Some of the words were a little hard for me but it is a Level 2 reader. I would have liked a Level 1. I also thought it would have been much better if it was called "My Pet Elephant". That would have made it much more better. After all, the GOP has an elephant for our mascot. Another reason an elephant would have been more better is because I have been known to have seen pink elephants lots of times. So, that is why I think it should have been about an elephant and not a goat. But at least it was not "My Pet Donkey". Haw, Haw. Then I wouldn't have liked the story at all.

This book totally captured my imagination and I could not resist telling my friends all about it, even though the grownups kept bugging me about other things I was sposed to do. This book belongs right beside The Very Hungry Caterpillar Katapilla??? in my presidential library. Actually it's more of a presidential bookshelf and my friend Johnny Ashcroft always wants to know what I and my other friends are reading.
